Aly Beck Interview
How did you become a writer? I think it’s always been a part of me. I’ve always had stories inside my head that needed to be told and characters that wouldn’t stop screaming for me to write them. As far back as I can remember, it’s been a part of my DNA.
What inspires you to write? Everything, to be honest. I get inspiration from anywhere and everywhere. There’s always something that sparks an idea and then BOOM—a full book is written by that spark.
How do you develop your plot and characters? I’ve always had a knack for daydreaming and that seems to be the best way for me to plot and discover my characters. They come so naturally to me that I just sit back and get lost in my thoughts. Of course, I sit in front of a notebook, too and develop on paper WHY they’re the way they are and why the plot is going the way it is. Not to mention, I have a wonderful team of editors, beta readers, and alpha readers who help me brainstorm.
Could you share some of your challenges as a writer? Sometimes it’s hard to get the words to get on paper. I know the story, but the block in my mind is such a brick wall, it’s hard to break through. I always do eventually, but it’s a challenge sometimes.
Tell me about your protagonist. What's your favorite trait and/or weakness? Ah. Journey. She’s been through a lot in her life—getting kidnapped, forced to work for an evil mafia leader to protect her sister, and she’s finally getting the justice she deserves. (It helps that she has 3 mafia men at her side to help, too.) She’s so strong, but also hardheaded.
How does your antagonist create conflict? Through chaos. LOL. He’s a mafia leader who has no morals…anything he can do to mess with Journey’s life and her men, he’ll do it.
What are your current/future projects? I am currently editing a book due out in January of 2025 and then, I’m going to focus on a fun trilogy within the same world as the book I’m editing.
Do you have a routine you follow when writing? I start writing every day at 10 am after getting my kids to school and then write until they come home. Or try to, at least!
If you could go back in time and give yourself advice, what would it be? Never give up. All the pain is worth it.
Do you have any advice for aspiring writers? Keep going. Writing is hard, you’ll come across challenges that make you want to quit, but you can’t. Just keep writing.
